You will hear lots of good things about gay travel to Costa Rica from gay people in many countries. If you have ever visited this gorgeous part of the world, you will know that it is a sun-worshiper’s paradise. Costa Rica is a country in Central America, bordered by the Caribbean Sea, the Pacific Ocean, and Nicaragua.

The sea water is pristine, the surrounding beauty is breath-taking and the laid-back pace is seductive. This little nation plays host to no less than 1.5 million visitors every year. The weather is greatly varied for such a small country. In the highlands, it is cold while in the Central Valley and San Jose, conditions are spring-like all year round. The Pacific and Caribbean coasts are hot throughout the year.

Most visitors come in the summer months from December to April. This is the dry season which the locals refer to as ‘verano’. Apart from the beaches, the area has spectacular tropical jungles, volcanoes, exotic vegetation, waterfalls, and wildlife. Costa Rica is known to be one of the world’s most gay-friendly and peaceful countries. Some popular activities are jungle tours, spa excursions and horseback riding.

There are plenty of accommodation choices from spa resorts and Bed and Breakfasts, to inns, hotels and motels that cater for gay visitors. Most of these are owned and supervised by gay people. The most popular areas for gay vacations are Manuel Antonio, Quepos, Jaco, San Jose, and Arenal. When making your bookings, ask about special offers and discount packages for out-of-season periods.

If you want to indulge yourself at a top-end resort, a stay at the Tabacon Grand Spa is highly recommended. It’s a mainstream establishment but is non-discriminatory. This is proved by reviews written by gay visitors. It is situated near the region’s well-known natural springs and has its own superb spa facilities.

On arrival in Costa Rica, numerous gay visitors book into Colours Gay Resort in San Jose for the first night. The reason is two-fold: firstly, it is very close to the airport and, secondly, the helpful and friendly staff is knowledgeable about Costa Rica and they can give many tips about the areas that are worth a visit. They can also tell you where to find the best nightclubs, entertainment facilities, and bars.

Having said this, don’t see Colours as just a stop-over. This is a fine boutique hotel that offers a full service and is sought-after by guests from all over the world. In a gorgeous tropical atmosphere, facilities include a solar-heated pool, a secluded spa, and a private sundeck. It is centrally located on the Boulevard Rohrmoser which is just 15 minutes away from the cultural precinct.

When considering accommodation choices for gay travel to Costa Rica, there are also a number of very good backpackers’ lodges. Most have licensed bars, swimming pools, wi-fi and internet, 24 hour security, as well as tea and coffee machines. During Happy Hour between 5-7pm, you can get discounted cocktails, draft beer and shots. Costa Rica offers some fine international restaurants which often have DJs, live music, and themed nights.
