Be ready for a friendly welcome in the beautiful country of Thailand. The smiling people do not label you for being straight or gay. They really have no concern about either, and they do not care if you are gay or straight. That is why you will find gay vacations to Thailand a very special adventure.
Asian men will be friendly, as they very much want to meet the western man. They know a bit of English, so that they can communicate with you. And it may extend past the hotel room. You will find gay friends and nightclubs readily available to welcome you.
Because the Thai people are not infatuated with youth, there is a lively gay community over the age of 35. This is a delight to gay westerners that are middle aged and even older. The local gay bars, as well as other establishments, can be found by simply asking some of the locals about them.
Many gay establishments were commercial, such as bars, saunas, and go-go clubs, until recently. Now the bigger cities have non-commercial discos, coffee houses, and bars. And for the truly enjoyable gay experience, visit a local go-go boy bar.
Although the gay community is obvious, kissing and hugging in public is looked down upon. A public show of affection in any way is inappropriate to the Thai people, and it is the same for gays as it is for straight people. If you do see two Thai men arm in arm, they are just friends and are not displaying any other type of affection.
And the Thai people are very modest. They will dress behind a towel or other cover, even in a gym locker room. The bedroom may display the same modesty, at least until things get going. And if you are expecting wild and crazy sex, you may be in for a disappointment. It is probably a good idea to discuss any special interests you may have.
A lot of bars and night spots have drag shows that star what the Thai people call ladyboys. They are very popular, but usually cater to a straight crowd. In bars where you might find a man to take home for the night, this is a relatively safe practice, as the bars know whom they are hiring.
There are some additional cultural differences you should be aware of. For instance, you are expected to pay for everything. There is no such thing as going dutch. As the western man, you are considered the social superior, as strange as that may sound. Frequent compliments on your part are good. Dressing well, with pressed, long pants, and a dress shirt is respectable and appreciated. And be ready to have your cheeks sniffed, as this is a sign of affection. Sharing clothing, and even your tooth brush could happen, so do not sweat it. Be generous. And you will have the time of your life on your gay travel to Thailand.
